PURPLE SHABBAT
October 10-11, 2025
Over 1 in 3 (35.6%) women and 1 in 4 men (28.5%) in the US have experienced rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime.
(National Domestic Violence Hotline)
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) and JCADA encourages you to host a Purple Shabbat to heighten awareness of this pervasive issue. Hosting a Purple Shabbat signals that your community supports survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV), reinforces that abuse will not be tolerated, and normalizes conversations about healthy and unhealthy relationship behaviors. Additionally, you are helping ensure that your constituents have access to JCADA’s life-saving services and resources so everyone can live safe and empowered lives.
For JCADA's 25th Anniversary in the year 2025, our goal is for 25 congregations and communities in the DMV to participate in Purple Shabbat! We offer a comprehensive toolkit so you and your leadership can customize a Purple Shabbat experience to best fit the needs of your community. Below you will find links to a variety of materials that can be used to create your Purple Shabbat campaign.
If you cannot find what you are looking for, have a specific request that is not reflected in the materials, or have any other questions, please email us.

TALKING POINTS
Speaking from the Bimah (platform) about IPV is a powerful way to destigmatize the issue, model open conversations about healthy and unhealthy relationship behaviors, and lower the tolerance for abuse and violence in our communities. Below is a toolkit of talking points that use the lens of power-based violence and abuse to interpret some Torah stories and holiday themes to be used in crafting a sermon, writing a bulletin message, or other communications as part of your Purple Shabbat campaign.
If you don't see what you're looking for, reach out to Lauren Wistreich, JCADA's Director of Education and Outreach, who can help you craft remarks for your topic.
INFORMATION TABLE
During Domestic Violence Awareness Month and during Purple Shabbat, we encourage you to share resources and information with your community about IPV. Displaying these materials helps to destigmatize the issue of IPV, gives people language to explore healthy and unhealthy relationship behaviors, and empower your constituents to openly engage in productive conversations around the issue of abuse and violence, which contributes to the health and wellbeing of our communities.
The toolkit below links to a variety of one page, fast-fact, informational sheets about IPV, and how to get involved with JCADA.
